Within minutes of President Trump telling the free press that the United States is prepared to launch a military assault on Venezuela, the Pentagon issued a statement refuting the claim.
“We have many options for Venezuela. And by the way, I’m not gonna rule out a military option,” Trump said. “We’re all over the world, and we have troops all over the world, in places that are very, very far away.”
The statement immediately stoked fears around the world so severely that the Pentagon felt compelled to defy their Commander-in-Chief, with a Department of Defense spokesperson saying, “any insinuations by the Maduro regime that we are planning an invasion are baseless.”
Of course, the insinuations were not made by Venezuela’s leader but our own, and the thinly veiled rebuke of their boss shows the calculations and sensitivities necessary to averting global catastrophe. Trump would be wise to take note or at least sit back and let them do the talking.
Until then, the Pentagon can add one more loose canon to the list of unhinged world leaders it has to keep in check.
