The overwhelming national revulsion over yesterday’s white supremacist attack on counter-protestors in Charlottesville, Virginia has even some of the most right wing Republicans suddenly publicly proclaiming their dedication to civil rights and equality and piling outrage onto neo-Nazis they not so quietly welcomed into their coalition so recently.
The hypocrisy of the party behind voter roll purges, restrictive voter ID laws, and racial gerrymandering renouncing white nationalists did not go unnoticed, however.
House Speaker Paul Ryan was one of the top Republican leaders who took to Twitter in the aftermath of the tragedy with an obligatory expression of condemnation.
Our hearts are with today's victims. White supremacy is a scourge. This hate and its terrorism must be confronted and defeated.

Singer and musician John Legend was in no mood for false piety, however. He replied to Ryan’s tweet with a response that resonated in the hearts of many Americans who are completely fed up with the regressive direction the country has taken under the Trump administration.
Impeach the white supremacist in the White House or STFU https://t.co/xy8RPoYoZs

Legend, like many of us, judges people by the company they keep. With Ryan and the rest of the Republican establishment still supporting a president who keeps such alt-right, neo-Nazis as Steve Bannon and Sebastian Gorka on his staff, the depth of hypocrisy sinks to such new lows that every new Republican expression of dismay at the behavior of their followers makes every politically conscious American want to shout: “STFU!!!!!”
